Balance bikes are a proven and popular way to get little children onto their first bike. The idea is simple - teach them to balance first, then let them learn to pedal! It's a switcharound of the older idea of training wheels - which teaches pedalling before balancing. The problem with training wheels is that when you start to raise them up a little, many children (most?) learn to lean to one side - so they're still not actually balancing!
