"I'd recommend one of these to just about anyone"

An incredibly versatile bike which can do duty as a moderately quick road bike, robust commuting bike, gravel race bike, cyclocross race bike or bikepacking/go-pretty-much-anywhere bike.

Imagine you started with the most versatile and universal bike building material: steel. Then build a road bike, but with much bigger tyres. Now ease off the geometry just a little to improve stability on loose surfaces. Give it disc brakes and practical gearing. Add TONS of mounting points for bottle cages and racks and heck-knows-what-else.

What you'd have would be something like the Croix de Fer. Hard to say, easy to ride.
